India BIS UPS Standard Update
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued an update regarding UPS
(Uninterruptible Power Supply systems, including standalone, portable, stationary, or
those built into low-voltage distribution systems).
Old Standard: IS 16242 (Part 1):2014 / IEC 62040-1:2008
New Standard: IS 16242 (Part 1):2025 / IEC 62040-1:2017
Parallel applicability period: Until November 19, 2025.
After this date, the old standard will be completely withdrawn.
⚫ Main updates include:
1. IS16242(Part 1):2025/IEC62040-1:2017 uses IEC62477-1:2012 as a reference document.
2. Definition of movable UPS has been added.
3. Modified the clause on flammability of enclosure materials.
4. Additional working voltages added in creepage distance test.
5. Additional requirements in steady force test.
6. Additional requirements in handles and manual control securement test.
7. Additional requirements in touch current measurement test.
8. Modified requirements in capacitor discharge test for pluggable type B UPS and additional requirement for permanently connected UPS.
9. Additional requirements in temperature rise test.
10. Modified requirements in input current test.
11. Additional clauses: short time withstand current, unsynchronized load transfer test, loss of coolant test, dry heat test, damp heat test, hydrostatic pressure test.
⚫ For existing certificate holders (licensees):
Licensees must complete testing and upgrading to the new standard before the deadline. Certificates not upgraded by the deadline will be cancelled.
⚫ For new applicants:
Applicants may choose either the old or the new standard when applying from the date of this notice.
However, those choosing the old standard must provide a declaration committing to upgrade to the new standard before the deadline.
Certificates not upgraded by the deadline will be cancelled.
